VOL 8, NO 4 (2021) "Supercomputing in Weather, Climate and Environmental Prediction"

Submission Deadline: 1 November 2021

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) and Earth System modeling (ESM) have been for decades among the most challenging tasks for high-performance computing owing to dramatic range of temporal and spatial scales to be resolved and complexity of processes being simulated. Currently, the progress of weather and climate services as well as related academic studies critically depend not only on the performance of HPC systems but also on the efficiency of usage of computing hardware, memory and interconnect capacities. The newly developed numerical methods as well as elaboration of existent codes have to target the usage of hybrid HPC architectures. From the other hand, principally new approaches to environmental prediction based on machine learning algorithms (highly efficient on modern GPUs) demonstrate excellent results in a number of environmental problems. The latter includes AI spatio-temporal model for natural phenomenon prediction, as well as, the promising fusion of AI models with more traditional Navier-Stokes-based models of atmosphere and ocean dynamics. The objective of this special issue is to present recent advances in development and cutting-edge application of HPC codes for weather/climate and environmental prediction, covering a wide range of aspects from mathematical basis of HPC algorithms, and new AI related approaches to leverage weather forecast, to application porting and tuning on specific supercomputer hardware.

This Special Issue on Supercomputing in Weather, Climate and Environmental Prediction (#4, 2021) of the scientific journal ''Supercomputing Frontiers and Innovations'' (indexed at ACM Digital Library and Scopus) is an open call for contributions seeking original, unpublished papers that present scientific contributions in the field of high-performance computing.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of perspective numerical methods and algorithms for solution of large-scale direct and inverse Weather/Climate/Environment (WCE) problems on HPC systems;
  • Fine tuning of computation performance and memory handling in software intended for WCE studies;
  • Porting, performance diagnostics and optimization of WCE applications on novel hybrid HPC architectures;
  • Development tools for HPC applications in WCE studies;
  • Big data management and visualization in WCE applications;
  • Advances in application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to WCE prediction;
  • Approaches for the optimization of the training of AI models to WCE in HPC systems;
  • New parameterizations of physical/chemical/biological processes in WCE models and related computational aspects;
  • Supercomputing and geospatial data processing for WCE applications;
  • Validation and calibration of HPC geophysical models;
  • Applications of HPC in cutting-edge fundamental and applied WCE problems.

A paper is 10–16 pages long and presents the results of a completed scientific study. All articles will be peer reviewed and accepted based on quality, originality, novelty, and relevance to the special issue.

Contributions should be written in good English and must meet Supercomputing Frontiers and Innovations standards. Please prepare your article according to the Author Guidelines before submitting a manuscript, and use JSFI's system to submit your manuscripts online (registration in the system).
